Dive Sites: Sandy Slope & Zip line

Sunday was spent on the West side of Turneffe Atoll, diving Sandy Slope and Zip line. On the first dive, we had a green moray tagging along for about 15 minutes. We also saw several black groupers and Nassau groupers. There was a steady stream of Creole wrasse along the drop-off, and while snapper and grunts hung out in schools on the reef. In the sand we found peacock flounder, hermit crabs, yellow head jaw fish, razor fish, Southern stingrays, garden eels, and a seahorse.

Dive Sites: Front Porch & Grand Bogue

Today’s dives continued on the South of Turneffe Atoll at Front Porch and Grand Bogue. Some of today’s sightings included green and spotted morays, a huge barracuda, a massive rough tail stingray, black groupers, rainbow parrot fish, midnight parrot fish, and a hawks bill turtle. We also found a nurse shark sleeping under a coral head, and a big old Loggerhead turtle cruised by in the shallows. On the night dive, we saw some octopi, 2 toad fish, squid, eels, nudibranch, and lobsters.

Dive Sites: Blue Hole & Long Caye Wall

Our first stop of the day was to the Great Blue Hole. We took our divers down to the depths below to look at massive stalactites that were formed over 10,000 years ago when the Blue Hole was a cave above the surface.

Next we went to Long Caye Wall for the afternoon and night dives. It was a great day of diving, with swarming Creole wrasse, a squadron of tarpon, horse-eye jacks, golden tail eel, groupers, porcupine fish, and as we were looking at a seahorse on the wall, a Caribbean reef shark came up to check us out.

Dive Sites: Long Caye Ridge & X-Site

One of the first things we saw today was a Caribbean Reef shark zipping around. He stayed long enough to pose for some pictures then took off down the wall. In the shallows we found a Southern stingray, sea cucumbers, a baby hawks bill, spiny head blennies, and tons of barracuda. There are nice sponges on these sites too. A huge moray was splayed out on the sand between to coral heads. Under the boat we saw a school of horse eye jacks, tarpon, and some permit.

Dive Sites: Julie’s Jungle &

Julie’s Jungle has great sponge life! There is a very unique sponge here that is over 10ft tall and has several other sponges growing at its base. In addition to the sponges, it is just a beautiful reef with fantastic wall drop off and some cool sand chutes. An abundance of fish tops it off. Painted wall is also home to great coral, sponge, and marine life. The kaleidoscope of color is fascinating. Today we saw a black tip reef shark, several morays, hawks bill turtle, schools of Sergeant Majors, lobsters running in line across the sand, slender file fish, and bar jacks.

Dive Site: Long Caye Wall

We finished off the week of diving at Long Caye Wall. Our first dive was a pre-breakfast dive at 6:00am and then another after breakfast, before heading back to the dock. On the final dives, we saw a green moray out feeding, several barracudas and groupers, a hawks bill turtle, and lots of reef fish swimming around. All the parrot fish were waking up and the hustling and bustle of the Creole wrasse, sergeant majors, blue tangs, bar jacks, and tother schooling fish looked like early morning rush hour. Two great dives to finish a great week of diving.

Congrats to Scott and Shelby on getting their Advanced Open Water certifications.

Congrats to Ron, Tanja, and Bodo on doing all the dives this week and becoming Belize Aggressor III IRON DIVERS!!!

Thank you all for a GREAT week!
