Latest Captain's Log - Maldives Aggressor

Log Date: Monday, August 30th, 2010
Entry By: Crew

Captains Log for the Maldives Aggressor 16th-30th August
Weather- Sunny intervals with patchy cloud
Wind – 15-30 mph WNW
Air temperature mid 80’s
Water temperature 83f
After meeting everybody at the airport we whisked them off to the mother ship to be briefed on the fun and games we will be enjoying over the coming days. After fresh tuna for dinner and of course a little wine and beer, everyone called it an early night to be fresh for the diving in the morning.
Our diving vessel which goes by the name of a Dhoni left for our first dive after a deck briefing given by our dive master Shah. Everybody suited up and jumped into the Indian Ocean which is a nice and warm 83f so you could wear anything from a rash guard to a 5mm wetsuit. Banana Reef was our first location and we had a nice time exploring all the over hangs in which live a great variety of fish like Rock Cod, Brown Sweetlips and Lined Butterfly fish . We had an extra little surprise as we spotted the silhouette of a Green Turtle swimming through our bubbles. Our afternoon was spent exploring the very healthy reef at Coral garden, excellent formations of Staghorn Coral were all over the place, juvenile Blue faced Angelfish were hiding under small Table Coral and the Damsel fish were prominent in guarding their homes from any unwanted visitors. Chef Chandana cooked the guests some beautiful Asian style Chicken topped off with some Brownies with ice cream to round off a nice first day.
Wednesday started with toast and coffee before our first dive at Nakahcha Thila. The ocean was flat calm with no current and with a ton of different fish around us including Yellow Spotted Triggerfish, Sailfin Surgeon fish and lots of Moorish Idols pecking away at some Algae. We made the five hour crossing to Baa atoll and everybody jumped on the sun loungers and made the most of a beautiful sunny day with just a little breeze to keep you cool. The afternoon dive was at Dhigali Giri, there was a great amount of Two spot Snappers and Thin Lined Fusiliers were zooming around looking very busy . We also saw a couple of Racoon Butterfly chasing each other around the corals. On close inspection of a Sea whip we discovered a few tiny little Gobies about the size of your fingernail. Tuna Filets for dinner and maybe tomorrow we will be seeing a few Manta Rays maybe.
Thursday morning was just perfect, a beautiful sunrise was followed by a good dive at Dhigali Thila. Then everything went a little bit turbo as we made our entrance into Hanifaru Bay. We donned our scuba gear and dropped into water only around forty feet deep, the water was thick with plankton, then we turned around to see a shadow approaching us, it was our first Manta Sighting off the week but hang on a minute there is more than one! We all hovered in amazement as we witnessed around twenty Giant manta Ray flying in Formation with their mouths gaping open filtering food from the water, these Manta’s didn’t care about nothing and came within a few feet of us, so close that they would look you right in the eye as they glided past. The Manta’s put on an exhibition performance as they barrel rolled, swooped towards the surface, then back down to the bottom with their mouths wide open enjoying the great amounts of food available , it really was like watching those stunt aeroplanes you get at an air show. We stayed for over seventy five minutes and I have never seen such an excited bunch
