AIRPORT & ARRIVAL 

The Maldives, officially ‘The Republic of Maldives’ in an independent country and has one main international airport, Velana International Airport(MLE) also known as Malé International Airport. It operates both domestic and international flights. The major airlines that fly into MLE are Singapore, Sri Lankan, Emirates, Delta, and Qatar Airways. There are many connecting flights from the US, UK, and Europe. Malé is the capital of Maldives and is situated on the largest island in the Male Atoll and is slightly more than 1.5 times the size of Washington, D.C.

There are  notable historic sites in the Maldives that showcase the country’s cultural heritage. Male Mosque(a UNESCO World Heritage site), the National Museum, Uteemu Ganduvaru, Buddhist ruins of Kudahuvadhoo, are some of the historical sites.

CUISINE

Maldivian culture is influenced by the flavors and ingredients of South Indian, Sri Lankan, and Arabian cuisines. Seafood plays a central role, given the abundance of fresh fish in the surrounding waters. When visiting the Maldives, be sure to try some authentic Maldivian dishes such as Fihunu Mas or Bambukeylu Hitun to get a taste of the local cuisine and culinary traditions.

TRANSPORTATION

Due to the country’s unique geography of scattered islands;  ferries, seaplanes, and speedboats are often included in transportation needs. Local islands have limited public transportation but they do have taxis and small buses available. It is recommended you check with agent for transportation options for your specific travel plans.

The Maldives offers a variety of local crafts and artwork that showcase Maldivian culture and traditions to local textiles (including feyli) which is a colorful garment made of cotton or silk. The Male local market is a has a variety of fresh produce, spices, local crafts, and souvenirs.
